WHY ARROW FANS SHOULD BE HAPPILY SURPRISED BY VIGILANTE’S IDENTITY REVEAL IN SEASON 6

Arrow‘s fifth season laid the groundwork for some insane plot threads in Season 6, but one of the most intriguing of the bunch was the teased reveal of Vigilante. Star City’s gun-toting villain/anti-hero has had frequent run ins with Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen over the last year, but his (or her) identity remains a complete mystery. Fans have puzzled over who could be hiding under that tactical mask, but Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim took the stage for the Arrow panel at San Diego Comic-Con to reassure all of us that Vigilante is someone we have seen before.

We’re big believers that if you have a mystery. Like some kind of ‘whodunit’ or ‘Who is the Vigilante? Who is it?’ It’s always really unsatisfying if the answer to the mystery is ‘Yeah, some person you’ve never seen before.’ So you can probably expect that whoever’s behind that mask is a face that is familiar to you.

Such a reveal makes plenty of sense because Arrow has been down this road before. In Season 2 Oliver spent much of the first half of the Deathstroke story arc hunting a mysterious woman in a blonde wig who had taken to the streets to fight men preying on women. Eventually, the storyline paid off in a major way, as the show revealed that Sara Lance was not only alive after the sinking of the Queen’s Gambit, but she had taken on the identity of The Canary after receiving training from The League of Assassins and Ra’s Al Ghul. The narratives are obviously not completely identical, but it shows a pattern; you do not tease a mystery character and then let audiences down with the reveal of someone entirely new.

Theories on the identity of the masked killer have varied over the course of the last year, ranging from the obvious to the obscure. Among these possible reveals are Tommy Merlyn, Earth-2 Adrian Chase, Lucas Hilton (Quentin Lance’s partner who died at the hands Cyrus “Solomon Grundy” Gold in Season 2), or even Star City journalist Susan Williams. There are a wealth of options for the show to choose, but we will have to wait and see what happens when Season 6 finally premieres.
